Florida Urology Physicians – Spotlight on Vasectomy and Vasectomy Reversal

Deciding to get a vasectomy is one of the biggest decisions in a man’s life. A vasectomy is a safe and easy outpatient procedure that acts as a permanent birth control for men. As such, you should only get a vasectomy if you and your partner are certain that you don’t want any more children in the future. A vasectomy is a nearly painless procedure. With the traditional vasectomy, a local anesthetic is applied to the area and one or two very small incisions are made in the scrotum. Through these incisions, the vas deferens, which transports sperm into the ejaculatory ducts, is cut and a portion is removed from both sides. Absorbable sutures are used for this type of vasectomy. In the no scalpel technique, a single puncture is made into the scrotum and a clamping device brings the vas deferens out of the skin for the vas deferens to be cut. This technique usually requires no stitches. Vasectomies aren’t the only form of permanent birth control. A woman can also undergo a tubal ligation, in which her fallopian tubes are clamped and blocked or severed and sealed. This method, however, requires a more invasive surgery that requires full anesthesia and deep incisions into the abdomen. If the tubal ligation fails, the woman is at risk for a tubal pregnancy, which have significant potential complications including death. Vasectomies are more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancies. Although vasectomies are a permanent form of birth control, they can be reversed by reconnecting the vas deferens with microsurgical instrumentation and suture material that is very fine. A vasectomy reversal usually takes several hours and requires full sedation. If you’ve already made the decision or would like to learn more about getting a vasectomy, Punta Gorda urologists with Florida Urology Physicians can help.
