Don’t let your bladder inhibit your life

Urinary problems are very common, and usually easy to treat.  The problem is that people are embarrassed to discuss this even with their doctor.

According to urologist Dr. Barry Blitz, “Patients do not realize how much of their daily life and self-image is linked to dealing with their urinary troubles.” The bladder has two jobs; storing and emptying urine. Incontinence is the inability to control when and where your bladder empties.
Urinating frequently interrupts work activities, travelling, and social situations.  Urinary leakage leads to feelings of embarrassment, and the concern that aging is upon them.  The good news is that there are many options for the treatment of incontinence. “It is a marvelous feeling to restore normal bladder function, and regain so much of one’s life.”

Men and women usually have different causes for their similar problems. More than 13 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence and women are twice as likely to have it as men. A urologist is trained to treat these conditions with a variety of options, including medications, home exercises, behavioral modifications, and sometimes by using outpatient procedures.  Dr. Blitz mentioned that most urinary problems get worse with time, and rarely get better on their own. The sooner the patient shows up to the doctor, the easier the cure.  He adds, “It is a shame that people neglect their bladder troubles because they thought it was just part of aging or could not find a way to talk to their doctor about it. I hope that people knowing they are not alone will encourage them to seek help.”
